Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

    My late uncle told me a story from his grizzly bear hunt when I asked about his bear rug..he said the grizzly was charging close enough with a an army 45 colt emptied the mag on its head and it didn't phase it. So he had to use his 30-06 m1 Garand ..that dropped it. The 45 bullets did not penitrate the skull just the hide

    Ron, the shooting on a hill is simply a horizontal distance. At a 60% slope, COS is .5 so the horizontal distance is 1/2 the distance your range finder tells you. (I am a math teacher, not a good shooter.)

    Thank you for this video. You offer a great exposition of the whys and wherefores of the .30-'06 cartridge. Like many others, I believe the .30-'06 cartridge will not go obsolete for many, many years, and for (in no particular order) good reasons: 1) Availability. The ammo is everywhere. 2) Reliability. It gets the job done on virtually everything on the North American continent, with the possible exception of the Polar Bear. 3) Versatility. You can handload for everything from Groundhog to Grizzly. 4) Shootability. Its recoil can be handled by all but the most recoil-sensitive shooters. 5) Historic Ubiquity. There are far too many .30-'06 rifles in the hands of far too many shooters. No one is suddenly going to decide to throw away the Model 70 that has been putting Whitetails in the freezer for three generations.

    There ARE semi-auto .357 mag pistols available also. Most ppl avoid these yet compare recoil ft.lbs of both and choose .. 4" barrelled .357 mag help and with recoil, target acquition. My choice is w/ .357 mag w/ 200 gr, hard-cast, flat nosed, Double Tap ammo and 2 shots practice weekly and now kneeling.

    This man speaks a huge universal truth about caliber choice. If you have a hand-cannon that is very hard to recover from for rapid shot placement, versus a smaller but effective caliber that you can successfully put rounds on target (meaning you are inflicting lethal damage to eliminate the threat), then that is the basic difference between life and death, or more succinctly...putting down a charging bear or just hoping you survive being horribly mauled.

    Ron - Which do you recommend in 45-70 for hunting. Marlin (Ruger made) Guide gun or one of the Henry 45-70 like the Big Boy side loading gate etc? What are your thoughts between the Marlin and Henry?

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors
      @RonSpomerOutdoors 22 години тому

      The Ruger has a fine reputation in the Guide Gun model, but the Henry is a near if not clear copy so far as the action goes. I've not worked with the new Ruger/Marlins, but by all reports they are excellent. I've found the workmanship on the Henry's quite good, and they look/feel/cycle quite reliably. There is also the Winchester M1886 in 45-70, a traditional, proven and beloved rifle. Three solid options. I think the Ruger is outfitted a bit more sensibly for rugged conditions, i.e. wet. Laminated stock is good, but I wish the steel was stainless or Cerakoted.

    I own model 70 .225 caliber. The cartridge zeros out at 218 yds with still sufficient killing power. 55 grain bullets are fast and very accurate ref. ballistic tables. Hard to locate ammunition now and very expensive. Reloading bullets impossible to find in Canada.

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors
      @RonSpomerOutdoors 23 години тому

      Bruce, I don't know what you mean by "zeros out," but by my calculations a 55-gr. SP from the 225 Winchester at 3,650 fps MV can be zeroed 1.75" high at 100 yards, peak 2" high at 150 yards, be dead on at 250 yards, and not fall more than 2" from line-of-sight until about 290 yards. That's a maximum point blank range for chucks, foxes, coyotes, and most standing ground squirrels. Energy will drop to about 1,000 f-p at about 200 yards, but still be about 500 f-p at 400 yards, and taht is more than sufficient for varmints of this size. I wouldn't bet against it tight behind the shoulder of a whitetail or mule deer, either.

    Up here in Canukastan, you can run into a polarbear as far south as Churchill Manitoba. I worked as a safety officer for a company that was asked to do a safety audit on the Alberta govt forrestry. While doing the office portion of the audit, we were escorted through their office I noticed pictures in the hallway of forestry workers with 12 shotguns attached to their back packs. I asked the escort what the shotguns were for, his response was for bears. I noted that the Alberta govt tell members of the public to use bear spray instead of using a shotgun. I wonder why arent these forresty workers not carrying spray instead of shotguns? food for thought.

    Perhaps, as a species, we need to imagine danger to fulfill another need - mastery over our environment. A pleasant day's hike in the driving rain and chilling wind might give us mastery stories down the road, but nothing beats mastering mortal danger for an immediate reward. Of the millions of collective man-hours spent in the pursuit of outdoor enjoyment and the millions of people who participate in this activity, the large, fanged, and clawed confrontation that hardly anyone ever encounters with “the bear” is so delicious of an imagining that the rise of the imagination cannot be resisted. So here is to the bear, wherever they may be, and here is to the imagination, hopefully always present and available. As for the chilling wind and driving rain? Sometimes, in Alaska, we can have all three simultaneously.
